An ingrown hair, medically known as pseudofolliculitis barbae, occurs when the tip of a hair curls back and grows into the skin. This can happen anywhere on the body but is most common in areas where hair is thick and curly, such as the beard, scalp, and pubic area.
Ingrown hairs can be painful, itchy, and unsightly. They can also lead to scarring if not treated properly. In some cases, ingrown hairs can become infected.
